Germany is at a critical juncture. The federal government has committed to a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and aims to raise the share of renewable energy to at least 80 percent. Experts warn, however, that without a rapid and large-scale expansion of battery storage, this target will be missed.
While solar and wind capacity are reaching record levels, the expansion of storage lags far behind. Studies by Fraunhofer ISE indicate a need for at least 200 gigawatts of storage capacity by 2030; currently only a few gigawatts are in operation.
The consequences are already visible: surplus electricity is curtailed, grids are pushed to their limits, and electricity prices fluctuate considerably.
