Konstanz/Hilden, 20 October 2026 - GEPVOLT SE and ATU have put the first battery-backed fast-charging station of their joint cooperation into operation at the Konstanz site. This marks the start of a nationwide charging infrastructure project that plans to equip up to 275 sites on ATU parking areas.
The new fast-charging station at Max-Stromeyer-Strasse 55a offers a charging power of up to 240 kilowatts (kW). It is available around the clock to ATU customers as well as all other electric vehicle drivers. Payment is possible with a charging card or directly by credit or debit card.
At the heart of the system is a battery storage unit with a capacity of around one megawatt hour (MWh), developed by GEPVOLT at its Hilden site. Over a longer period, the storage draws electricity from the public grid at comparatively low power and provides the stored energy at high power during charging. This allows electric vehicles to be charged quickly without having to draw the full charging power from the grid at all times.
The concept makes it possible to build high-performance charging infrastructure even at sites with limited grid connection capacity. Depending on the site, costly grid connection upgrades can thus be avoided or reduced.
GEPVOLT is responsible for the development, technical project planning, system integration and operation of the battery-backed charging infrastructure. The company also handles commissioning as well as technical support, maintenance and service.
“The expansion of charging infrastructure must not depend solely on how quickly additional grid capacity can be provided. With our battery storage systems, we enable high-performance fast charging even at sites with limited grid connection capacity. The successful commissioning in Konstanz is the first step of the nationwide rollout we are planning together with ATU,” says Franz Schnorbach, Member of the Management Board of GEPVOLT SE.
With the commissioning in Konstanz, GEPVOLT and ATU are implementing the expansion concept agreed in March 2026 at a site for the first time. The cooperation plans to equip up to 275 ATU sites in Germany with battery-backed fast-charging infrastructure. The further expansion is to take place step by step. According to the current project plan, the nationwide rollout is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
Headquartered in Hilden, GEPVOLT develops, produces, finances and operates industrial battery storage systems for industrial companies, energy suppliers, municipalities and operators of solar and wind parks. Through its own development and production, the company pursues a consistently industrial approach and relies on technologically independent solutions made in Germany.
